Training an animal to leave food alone when it is not theirs will begin by the way that you feed your animal. Do you give your dog table scraps? Do you get the “big brown eyes” routine with him sitting right next to you while you are eating? Is the stare accompanied by a whine or bark? By giving in to these temptations, you will be encouraging this behavior from him.
Dogs should be taught that human food is not theirs and should be left alone. Animals are instinctively curious and your dog will be very interested in what you are doing. Bigger dogs have the advantage because they can see the table and will know that there is something tasty just a few feet away. Littler dogs have a disadvantage since they might have to prop themselves up on their hind legs or jump on a chair or other object in order to reach what they are after. Worst case scenario is dogs that dig through the trash in search of human food. House dogs have no excuse to dig through the trash. This kind of behavior has probably been caused by owners giving dogs a treat from the table.
When dealing with dogs that beg from the table, immediate training is in order. The best method is to catch him in the act. Reprimanding him at the moment of disobedience is crucial for the learning process to fulfill itself. If you belatedly punish your dog, he will not know what it was that he did wrong. Dogs know that food stealing is wrong and if you can catch him, he can be persuaded to not repeat the mistake. There are also many training courses and products online that can help with the procedure.![]()
Kingsford is a very friendly, enthusiastic black lab mix whowill get a second chance that will start inside the walls of thestate penitentiary.
The year-old puppy has been at the Central Nebraska HumaneSociety in Grand Island for several months. Monday he left theshelter for Lincoln to be taught obedience by a prison inmate.
After being trained, Kingsford will go home with a veteran.
Kingsford is the latest dog from Grand Island to take part inthe Second Chance Pups program at the Nebraska State Penitentiarywhere inmates train shelter dogs. The program has been in place fornine years but this is the first time the veterans will get to takehome the dogs without a charge.
“You’ve got dogs who have had issues in their life that haveended up in a kennel and are struggling to get back out and make adifference, you’ve got inmates who are working on getting their acttogether, and you’ve got veterans now that have served and aregoing to get something back that will give them unconditionallove,” said Laurie Dethloff, executive director for the CentralNebraska Humane Society. “It is an impressive program that goes onquietly. There is not a negative in whole scenario.”
Second Chance Pups, run by Kim Ostermann and Julie Thornburg, actually trains the inmates to train the dogs, said Robyn Mays, associate director at the Central Nebraska Humane Society, addingthat not just any inmate is allowed to take part in theprogram.
“The inmates have to follow very strict criteria andguidelines,” she said, adding that if one of them fails to keep outof trouble, they are dropped from the program.
Mays said they have had the opportunity to talk with the inmatetrainers at graduation and said many of them have a difficult timegiving the dogs back.
“They love having the dogs because they know it may be theclosest thing to a real home environment they are ever going to seeagain,” she said, adding that some inmates who train dogs are inprison for life.
The dogs also are chosen carefully for health, disposition andbreed. “Not just any dog gets to go,” she said.
Mays said that dogs who are so-called “bully breeds” are not putinto the program, not because they are inherently vicious, but forfear that if a pit bull or rottweiler shows up at the prison, inmates may encourage it to fight the other dogs.
She said when choosing one of their dogs for the program, theylook for a dog that gets along with other dogs and people and areattentive.
“They cannot be timid,” Mays said. That is because thepenitentiary can be loud with a lot of commotion and people. Thatis why a dog like Kingsford, who is high energy, yet gets alongwith

Some schools only offer specific dog training services, while others only use certain training methods. Some dog training schools have experienced trainers and others are only just starting up. It can be overwhelming and many times, owners will simply pick a name out of the phone book and go from there; however, it is important that you take a bit of time selecting a dog training school and to follow a few tips when you do so. Know your dog breed: Before you select your dog training school, it is important that you really know your dog breed. Every breed responds to training differently and it will affect the method that you train your dog with.
For instance, some breeds are not food driven and you may need to find a trainer that works with other methods of positive reinforcement training. Other breeds do not do well with firm training that use things like correction collars and it is important to avoid trainers that use them. Knowing your breed will help you in finding the perfect training method and that will quickly narrow down your selection of dog training schools. Get to know the trainer: After you have narrowed down the dog training schools, take the time to go in and watch a class or two at different levels before you commit to one. When you are there, watch the trainer to see how he or she handles the class and how she interacts with the dogs.
If you find at any time that you don`t like the approach the training is taking, move to the next dog training school on your list. If you do like what you are seeing, stay after class and ask the trainer what areas he teaches in, the number of dogs in a regular class, and how he breaks the class up into groups. Also find out what his experience is and if he has worked with your breed before. If the trainer hasn`t, you may want to find a different trainer since you will see the best results if the trainer knows and understands your specific breed. Ask for references: When you are at the stage where you have a dog training school, stop and ask for references.
Make sure that you get references for both the training that will be working with your dog and also the dog training school in general. Although references are important, you should never rely solely on the references provided by the dog training schools. Instead, take the time to do a little internet research for past clients of the dog training school and to also ask your vet or other pet owners if they have heard anything, good or bad, about the dog training schools you are looking into. You will be surprised by the number of people who can offer you a bit of information. Know where you are going:
The last tip that I am going to mention when you are selecting a dog training school is to really know what you want from training. If you want basic training, you will actually have a larger selection of dog training schools then if you want a specific type of training such as agility training. Decide on whether you simply want a family pet or you want a dog that competes in agility, obedience or sporting events before you commit to a dog training school. Once you know where you want to go with your dog`s training, you can quickly find out which dog training schools offer which training and narrow down your search so you have the best match for both you and your dog.

For centuries, guard dogs worked alongside livestock farmers in the mountains of Portugal to protect their animals from the Iberian wolf.
But the dogs fell out of favour when shooting and poisoning came to be seen as a quick and easy method of controlling the wolves at the turn of the 20th century. Now that wolves are protected under Portuguese law, some of the country’s oldest dog breeds are being used to help struggling farmers co-exist with the predators.
Portuguese wolf conservation organisation Grupo Lobo is encouraging the farmers to turn back the clock and work with the rare dogs, which fiercely protect the flocks under their care and chase off attacking wolves.
Since 1988 there has been a ban on killing or harming wolves. Nevertheless, the wolves remain under constant threat, often from desperate farmers resorting to desperate means.
Some 300 Iberian wolves (Canis lupus signatus – a slightly smaller subspecies of the European grey wolf) survive in the northern and central highlands of Portugal.
“We are encouraging farmers to use traditional livestock guarding dogs once again, not only to cut down on livestock attacks which will help farmers tolerate the wolf more, but also to bring these traditional Portuguese dog breeds back from the brink,” explains Silvia Ribeiro, a biologist with the conservation project.
Dog breeds such as the Cao de Castro Laboreiro, Cao da Serra de Estrela and Cao de Gado Transmontano were highly valued in the past for their protective instinct and innate ability to bond strongly with the animals under their care.
“Their behaviour is quite unlike that of herding dogs. It is part of their character and breeding to bond with and protect their flock fiercely,” Ms Ribeiro says. “They are always actively on the look-out, sniffing for signs of trouble and watching for livestock in distress.
She says that if under attack, the dogs will stand between the flock and the wolf, barking and chasing the wolf away. Their sense of smell is so powerful they can even distinguish between the goats of their own flock and another.
For livestock farmers such as Alfredo Goncalves, who farms 450 goats on the edge of Peneda-Geres national park, the project is proving effective.
“I lose about 80 goats per year to wolves,” he says.
“Government inspectors come and evaluate any kills and we are paid for our lost livestock but often it can take one to two years and

There are many keyword tools out there. I like to use Overture’s because it’s free and easy. Keep in mind that the numbers from Overture are usually inflated – sometimes a little sometimes a lot. They fudge the numbers by counting like queries – fly and flies or affiliate and affiliates get counted as the same query. Remember – they make more money convincing their prospective advertisers that a search term is popular.
So plug in one of the general search terms from your list. I’m going to try dogs. Here are the results:
Searches done in February 2006
Count Search Term
1104234 dog
225786 dog breed
183180 dog training basics
152056 dog show
139072 dog breeders
98321 dog name
97021 dog training
91172 dog picture
88480 dog for sale
62657 dog grooming
56907 dog gift
I edited a few like snoop dog out for expediency. I like dog breeds and dog training [basics]. Looks like people are searching for both quite a bit. Now that we have the demand, let’s go over to Google and check the supply.
Type in the exact search term, putting quotes around it so Google searches for exactly what we want. If you put in dog breeds, Google returns 5,59o,000 results. Look in the upper right-hand corner for this number.
Ever heard of Sumatra Roy? Probably not. He’s a man who specializes in SEO and particular keyword research. He has invented a formula called the Keyword Effectiveness Index or KEI to measure the potential of a keyword. I use a simpler version of it. Here it is:
KEI = Demand / Supply
That is – Demand divided by Supply. The higher the KEI the better. This gives you a simplified KEI that ranges from 1-10. People compare this to the Richter Scale, meaning that each successive number is exponentially better than the last number.
In our example above, the KEI for dog breed would be .04, which isn’t that great.
Dog Training Basics yields 45,600 results for Google. The KEI would be 4, which is terrific. Hmmwait a minute. That concludes our lesson. Bye. [Sound of running down the hallway and door slamming]. A little nerd humor there.
Do a few more and see what you come up with. I did dog name and got a KEI of .10, which is lousy. I also tried dog gift, which got me a KEI of .07.
I usually pick up the highest KEI keywords and plug them back into the Overture tool and try it again.
Incidentally, Wordtracker does this all for you. Try it for free and see how easy it is. Just keep in mind that they use different sources for both supply and demand than my example above, but that shouldn’t make too much of a difference.
So now we should have a much smaller list that has some good prospects on it.

The first thing you must do after bringing a little pet home is to take it to a vet for a thorough check up. If he has any health complication, it could be detected early and treated forthwith. Second comes an anti-rabies inoculation to keep him protected against rabies and all those who accidentally get a scratch from his teeth. Besides the fact of course that the stray intruder who might get to sample a dog bite for accidentally or deliberately being where he or she is not supposed to be!
Once these two things are taken care of, a pet owner must find as to what has been the dog’s particular lifestyle– whether he is an active kind or a simple, docile one; whether he needs to exercise strenuously or can do with an occasional walk. It is important because dogs are quite sensitive to abrupt sea changes in their lifestyles and may not take well to it. So, be a bit careful about it.
Three things you must ensure on daily basis that the dog gets optimum amount of nutritious foods, gets to drink fresh and clean water and exercises. If your dog is the one with long hair, he needs regular baths to keep himself clean and disease free.
Then comes training. An untrained dog can really be a bad pet. You must be careful while training that you teach him the right commands to obey without being too harsh on him. At the same time one must not be too light, for that could make the dog take training less seriously than he should.
Dogs learn to obey easily and they are easy to train because of their natural urge to please the owner. Be affectionate to your dog at all the times, for nothing works better than strenuous training mixed with a little bit of love. That’s the magic potion that fails almost never.
